5th Antonio Janigro
International Cello Competition
Poreč
Community Center – Slavko Zlatić Elementary School of Music
October 22 – 26, 2004
Honoring the great Antonio Janigro, who gave a large part of his active
life to Zagreb, Zagreb Concert Management organizes a competition for
young and older cellists. Competition for participants under the age
of 20 is held biannually in October (Samobor 1996, Čakovec 1998, Poreč
2000 and 2002), while the competition for participants under the age
of 32 is held quadrennially in Zagreb.
This year, at the 5th jubilee Antonio Janigro International Competition
for participants under the age of 20, held between October 22nd and 26th
in Poreč, there were 57 candidates from 17 countries. This was the first
time the competition hosted participants from Turkey and Norway.
The opening ceremony was held at the Euphrasius’ Basilica with a concert
by David Grigorian accompanied by his wife and pianist Ludmila Lissovaya.
This year’s competition was special for the emphasis it put on the aspect
of teaching, which is not common at other competitions in the world.
In other words, each of the four categories, including the pre-category,
included a master-workshop where the candidates were given an opportunity
to work with two jury members of their choice. This helps the reputation
of the competition and enables a close contact and interaction with jury
members who are all eminent teachers at highly regarded schools:
David Grigorian, chairman of the jury who teaches in Germany; Alexander
Boyarsky from the Royal College of Music and Purcell School (UK); Elizabeth
Morrow from Dallas, Texas; Igor Škerjanec from Slovenia; and Nikola Ružević
from Croatia.
We are very proud to announce that “Little” Janigro is going strong
and that it will be held in Poreč again in 2006.
